                vacancy Psychology Technician

We are looking to recruit a Psychology Technician, due to a recent internal promotion, to join our Business and Science School based at our central Leeds campus.

As a Psychology Technician you will provide high-quality technical expertise and support to students, staff, and external partners for teaching-related activities (campus-based, distance learning, and collaborative) in the school. You will serve as a primary source of expertise in demonstrating the safe use of specialist psychological equipment, software, and techniques to students and staff.

Starting salary between £40,250 - £42,250 depending upon skills and experience

“This role has been an incredible springboard for my career. I was supported to pursue further study and training, and the teaching experience I gained here has helped me step into a Lecturer position. The Psychology team is small, friendly, and really supportive, I felt part of the team from day one and was involved in meetings straight away.

The role is varied – one moment you’re setting up sessions, the next you’re helping a student troubleshoot a technical issue. It’s all about enhancing the student experience, which I found really rewarding. You’ll need to be adaptable and willing to get stuck into different software and systems, but it’s a great opportunity to build your skills – especially in computer science and teaching.

I really enjoyed my 2.5 years in this position, and I’ll be around to help you settle in and show you the ropes.”

                Former Psychology Technician, now Lecturer

As a Psychology Technician at The University of Law Business and Science School, you will:

                • Provide high-quality, multi-specialist technical expertise and support for psychology teaching activities (e.g. practical classes, student projects) for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes during and outside standard term times.
                • Contributing to training for students and academic staff on research technologies, software platforms, and best practices.
                • Take responsibility for health, safety, and security in designated areas, ensuring compliance with all legal requirements, including managing risk assessments for laboratory and research spaces.
                • Attend and contribute to one-to-one line management meetings and technical team meetings.
                • Contribute to the development of a collaborative, collegiate, and inclusive culture in line with the University’s equality and diversity policies.

                Is this you?:

                • BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology or related discipline (2:1 or above)
                • Experience of conducting or assisting in designing and conducting psychological experiments
                • Knowledge of health and safety at work practices and legal requirements, and their implementation in a Psychology laboratory (Risk Assessments, PAT, COSHH etc)
                • Familiarity with psychological research software for experimental design, data collection and analysis (e.g. Gorilla, SPSS, NVivo, Qualtrics etc)
                • Good understanding of psychophysiological equipment (e.g. EEG, Biopac); observation and recording systems; and psychometric test batteries
                • Good programming skills in one or more languages (e.g. Python, C, C#, Java, VB, Matlab)
                • Willingness and ability to learn new software/systems and to stay current with emerging technologies.
                • Ability to work on own initiative and solve problems

                Why join us?

On top of a competitive salary, you’ll enjoy:

                • A generous annual leave entitlement of 35 days
                • Private Medical Scheme and Life Assurance
                • Contributory Pension Scheme
                • Season Ticket Loans and Student Discounts
